CLEVER USES FOR EMPTY MOVING BOXES

We are a green moving company and strive to be energy-efficient. We use the proper sized truck when booking jobs to cut down on unnecessary carbon emissions. Our boxes are made from recycled, biodegradable cardboard. There is a lot of debate whether plastic bins are environmentally better than cardboard boxes, but this post is not about that. It’s about fun and clever ways to reuse those empty moving boxes.

1. WEED KILLER

If you are lucky enough to have a patch of green – cardboard is a great way to keep your garden weed free. Use the side of a box that is ink free and has no stickers or wax. Then cut out the size you need to cover the weeds. If the area is large, you can use multiple pieces of cardboard tiled out. On top of the cardboard, spread a couple of inches of mulch, wood chips or leaf litter. The cardboard sheet mulching blocks and kills weeds and insulates plants during the frigid winter months. Over time, the cardboard will decompose and enhance the soil.

2. ORGANIZATION
Use different boxes to sort items for charity, thrift store or school drive donations. Label each box so sorting is easy and you can do throughout the year. By the end of the year, you are ready to donate boxes of clothes, canned items, coats and small appliances. Boxes are also perfect to organize holiday decorations. Cut the side flaps off a medium box and use to wrap christmas lights around it for storage. You can also use this to wrap extension cords to keep them tangle free. Or perhaps, use them to stage an apartment for sale.

3. ARTS & CRAFTS
Cardboard boxes make amazing children’s costumes from Robots to Rubic Cubes. You can also use to stack up boxes to create a fantastical Halloween Spooky Castle Wall or cut out Tree Shapes from wardrobe boxes. All you need is a good pair of scissors, clear packing tape, sponge brushes, watercolor paint and a bit of imagination!.

4. KID ACTIVITIES
On a snow day, who needs Rosebud when you have a box? Cardboard boxes make great impromptu sleds for sledding down a snowy hill. Or on a rainy day – lay a flattened, wardrobe box lengthwise on the bottom of a railed inside staircase and use as an indoor slide.

5. CAT BOX
If you have cats, the best use for an empty moving box maybe leaving a few of them out after you’ve settled into your new home. The boxes will occupy and calm the cats as they get used to their new surroundings. And on the plus side, it will be free entertainment for you until the cable guy shows up!
